Garba in Gujarat is a popular folk dance which is performed lavishly
on various festive occasions through the year. With Navaratri enjoyed by
other Indian states in their own unique ways, Gujarat welcomes the
festival through music, dances and gathering of people together. Here,
the major highlight of the nine-night festival is garba dance involving
people of all ages, especially the joyous and dance-loving women.
In Gujarati garba, the elaborately dressed women go round in circle,
clapping and whirling in the region of an idol of the Mother Goddess.
This dance is accompanied by music and singing, and all the people
rhythmically gyrate the body to mark the occasion. Furthermore, the
performers sometimes use colourful sticks in both hands, cling them
together or mutually, which is known as Dandiya, a variant of garba.
Dressing is an essential aspect of the Navratri wherein women are
found to be attired in the most colourful ways. Navratri celebrations
lit up the whole state for the course of nine days, as a sense of joy
gets visible all-round in the ambience with people look happy, appearing
in different costume almost each night.
Celebrations of Navratri mostly take place at night across India when
the people gather at a common spot to sing, pray to the goddess or
dance collectively. Much like the festival, the garba dance is enjoyed
in villages and neighbourhoods at night. All the community members step
out of their home, in a joyous mood to celebrate the festival in the
midst of extensive merry-making. All over Gujarat, dances go in late
into nights with music playing side-by-side, and foot-tapping songs are
played to charge up the whole ambience.
